Are Garmin GPS maps free to update?

I am looking to buy a Garmin GPS system. I heard a rumor that if you buy a new Garmin system (Nuvi series) that does not have the most updated maps preinstalled that you can get updates for free. Is this true? I can’t find anything on the Garmin website without having a serial number first.

New Garmin GPS that you puchase today should come with 2008 maps. If they don’t, you get a free update to 2008. This applies to units from July 2007 and later (?) but I am not sure of the cut-off date. If you buy now, you shouldn’t have to worry about that.
